UNSMIL condemns storming of State Council HQ, EU asks LPA implementation

Martin Kobler - Fayez Serraj15 October 2016 – The Special Representative of the Secretary-General and head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Martin Kobler, expresses his strong support for the Presidency Council of the Government of National Accord as the sole legitimate authority under the Libyan Political Agreement (LPA).

“I condemn yesterday’s attempt to seize the headquarters of the High Council of State. Such actions, aimed at creating parallel institutions and obstructing the implementation of the LPA, will generate further disorder and insecurity and must end for the sake of the Libyan People. The LPA remains to be only framework for a peaceful solution in Libya and I urge all political stakeholders to unify behind it,” said Martin Kobler.

“The use of force to seize power in Libya can only lead to further disorder and a spiral of violence where the Libyan people would be the main victims” – we can read on the statement by the spokesperson on the latest developments in Libya.

“It is vital that all stakeholders work together in support of the implementation of the Libya Political Agreement in order to bring about a democratic process in which all Libyan people find their place”.

EU still asked to Sarraj to form a more inclusive cabinet: “We call on the Presidency Council to rapidly strike a compromise on an inclusive new proposal for the formation of the Government of National Accord, and on which the House of Representatives needs to vote in a fair and orderly manner. The European Union will continue to lend support to the Libyan people and to UNSMIL in its efforts to bring about a lasting solution”.
