HERAT March 23 2014 – A outpatient clinic, a rehabilitation center for persons with disabilities and a school library were inaugurated in the morning of March 20 in Herat by the Italian military contingent in Afghanistan.
The works, completed just a few days before the official closing of the Provincial Reconstruction Team – the military component of the Italian contingent dedicated to development and reconstruction – have been delivered on the eve of the “Nowruz”, an ancient holiday celebrated in many Asian and Middle East countries as the beginning of the new year (1393) coinciding with the spring equinox.
The three facilities have been handed over to the local government authorities during as many ceremonies, during which there have been moments of emotion.

As in the neighborhood of Baba-e Barq, where the Italian troops built a clinic about 250 square meters that will enhance the health services in Herat province, allowing patients to be treated with appropriate diagnosis and cares, a significant improvement of the life conditions of the population.
The outpatient clinic for people with disabilities was built, instead, in favor of Pir-e Herat Foundation, a private foundation managed by voluntaries, born in the city in order to mitigate the condition of exclusion which certain segments of the population, particularly the ones in need of assistance, suffer.
Thanks to this facility, in the near future the members of the center will be able to grant patients with the development of skills within the cognitive environment, personal, social and emotional autonomy and, where possible, employment, through specific workshops and social activities.

A modern library, with annexed meeting room, offices, rooms, warehouses and toilets, will finally complete Gheyasia school, high school campus in Herat city.
Being the result of the dialogue between the Provincial Reconstruction Team and the Department of Education in Herat province, the library will allow teaching staff to take the best of this special learning environment, promoting the joy of reading and the pleasure of researching in favor of more than 11.000 young students.
The facilities, cost about 400.000 Euros allocated by the Ministry of Defense, have been realized in close coordination with local authorities and through local manpower, with positive economic fallout on the territory.
